What are the ethical principles and implications raised by legally mandating clients into treatment?

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, be certain to have read all the required resources for this week. The use of mandated, or legally coerced, treatment is widespread. Yet research demonstrating the efficacy of this type of treatment is limited, and mandating mental health treatment is one of the most contested issues in the field of psychology. To justify the continued use of mandated treatment, policymakers, practitioners, and researchers are obligated to demonstrate the effectiveness and limitations of such treatment programs.
You have been called in to consult on cases that may require mandated treatment. After reviewing the PSY699 The ethics of mandated treatment scenarios, choose two to discuss in your initial post. Begin your research with the required resources for this week. Using the specific situations presented in each of the scenarios you have chosen, conduct further research to help inform your recommendations for each individual. A minimum of one resource per scenario, beyond those already required for the assignment, must be included in your initial post.
In your post, construct clear and concise arguments using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories to present your recommendations as to whether or not treatment should be mandated for the individuals in each of the scenarios. As you write your recommendations, be certain to provide insights into the following questions.

What are the ethical principles and implications raised by legally mandating clients into treatment?
What evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of treatment with and without coercion for this type of situation?
What would be the challenges in evaluating the effectiveness of mandated treatment?
How might mandated treatment impact your clinical decision making as the mental health professional assigned to these cases?
What client factors might limit or augment the potential benefits of treatment if it were mandated?

Integrating concepts from your research and the required readings, offer insights across different content domains as to why you have reached these conclusions. Explain how you used the APA Ethical Code of Conduct to guide your decisions. Evaluate the generalizability of your specific research findings to the situations presented and provide a rationale as to why this research supports your recommendations.
Scenario 1:
A client with a well-established history of repeated dangerous behavior and inpatient commitment has been treated, stabilized, and discharged into the community. The treating psychiatrist believes that the client’s success in the community is far more likely if treatment is continued. However, the client wishes to terminate treatment. A request for mandated treatment is filed by the psychiatrist with the court. During the hearing, the psychiatrist testifies that while the client is not imminently dangerous, he potentially could become dangerous again without treatment.
Scenario 2:
A long-term client appeared quite excited during a recent session with her therapist. Speaking rapidly, she told the therapist that she was planning a gambling trip that would win her millions of dollars. After some probing, the therapist learned the client had recently stopped taking the medication prescribed for her bipolar disorder because she had been feeling so happy. The client also indicated that she no longer saw a need for therapy and was planning to stop treatment.

How are conference presentations professionally relevant?

Effective clinical innovations and the dissemination of research findings are key elements in the growth and development of the psychology profession. There are numerous avenues that enable authors to publish and present their work. Poster presentations at conferences are effective methods for communicating research findings and providing opportunities to meet with other researchers and clinicians to discuss the research being presented. Thus, these types of conference presentations play a key role in the proliferation of research.
In this week’s discussion, you will be submitting your proposal for the Week Five Virtual Conference. You may utilize relevant assignments from previous courses in this program or suitable projects from your professional life. See the PSY699 Call for Student Poster Presentations document for specific parameters and instructions on how to create your proposal. Following the guidelines presented in the document, create your proposal and attach it to your initial post in the discussion forum. Evaluate the impact participating in conference presentations may have on potential work settings and/or doctoral programs and comment on the following questions in your initial post.

How are conference presentations professionally relevant?
What elements of the proposal process were most difficult for you, and why?
What positive outcomes do you anticipate will come from this process, which may be applied to potential work settings and/or doctoral programs?

We invite you to submit a proposal for the Virtual Conference that will occur in Week Five of this course. The Virtual Conference is designed to bring the class together to review and evaluate poster presentations of technical, professional, and/or scientific interest to psychology professionals.
To submit your poster proposal, include the following information in a document attached to your initial post.
Poster Title
• Author Information
• Abstract (300 to 500 words maximum)
• List of References
The abstract should concisely explain the purpose and content of the poster. Abstracts for empirical studies, literature reviews, and meta-analyses should include the following sections: Objectives, Method, Results, Conclusions, and Implications. Abstracts for case studies, theoretical and methodological studies, and other projects should include the following sections: Purpose, Description, Assessment, and Conclusions.
The poster proposal must represent your original work. Work already published in another conference or journal will not be accepted. Please see the instructions for the Week Five Virtual Poster Conference Discussion for the Poster Submission Guidelines in order to prepare your poster for presentation.

Compare the annual population growth rate of the United States and Nigeria.

Before beginning work on this assignment, please review the expanded grading rubric for specific instructions relating to content and formatting.

Analyze the methodology used in scientific research.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

Competency 1: Analyze the methodology used in scientific research.
Describe the research problems investigated by selected articles.
Analyze the researchers’ rationale for identifying and investigating the research problems in selected articles.
Examine the alignment between the research problem and research question for each article.
Competency 2: Evaluate the characteristics, purposes, benefits, strengths, and weaknesses of research methods.
Explain the contribution the research will make to the knowledge base by solving each of the research problems.
Competency 6: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for members of the identified field of study.
Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for members of the identified field of study.
When you find, read, and analyze research literature and other scholarly works on a chosen research topic, you create a literature review. This is a carefully written analysis and summary of the information from the sources you read and analyze. Every empirical article you find has a literature review in the introduction of the article. Use these as examples for your own written literature reviews.

As a scholar and a professional, you will find that literature reviews are used for not only research articles, but also for conference or workplace presentations, or even when evaluating changes in managerial or business practice.

Literature reviews can be difficult and tedious. But they can also be extremely gratifying. It just depends on the perspective you choose to have. Not only will a solid literature review develop your expertise on a topic; it is also absolutely necessary before you can propose to do any kind of research. Research is done by experts. In addition to having deep knowledge, experts and researchers know which questions to ask and which ones are important to the field.

The first tool of research we must put into our researcher’s toolkit is a literature review—empirical knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon of interest. Research answers questions. The literature review tells us which questions have been answered and reveals to us which ones we have yet to answer or ask.
Preparation
Using the Capella University Library, select two primary research articles on the same research topic you used in Assessment 1. You may use articles you selected for Assessment 1. Keep in mind the following:
One of the articles that you choose must use a quantitative research methodology. The other article must use a qualitative methodology.
Mixed methodology studies are not permitted for this assessment.
The articles should be recent (published within the past five years) and discuss the theoretical framework used for the research.
Do not select articles that report a meta-analysis or are purely theoretical (with no data collection).
Carefully read both articles, noting how the researchers presented the research topic to the reader at the beginning of each article and how the literature review was crafted to demonstrate the research problem addressed by the study. Also note the research questions. Quantitative studies will sometimes present hypotheses instead of research questions.
To write your literature review, focus on the introduction section of each article.
Note: You will use these same two articles throughout the assessments in this course.

Instructions
In 6–8 pages, write a literature review in which you complete the following:

Begin your literature review with an introduction that explains the purpose of the review and its contents.
Describe the research topic that is investigated by the articles you chose.
This should be a general description of the topic (the subject matter of the articles), not an overview of the articles.
Present the topic scientifically, and provide citations to support your description.
Explain why the topic is relevant to the science of psychology and your specialization area or professional work.
Identify the research problems investigated in each article.
Discuss the researchers’ rationale for identifying and investigating these research problems.
Identify the research questions asked in each article.
Evaluate the alignment between the research problem and research question for each article.
In considering the introduction to each article—not the methodology, results, or discussion—discuss the contribution the research will make to the knowledge base by solving each of the research problems.
End your review with a summary and a conclusion.
Additional Requirements
As much as possible, the assessment should be written in your own words; it may include paraphrased information that is properly cited in the current APA style.
If you need to quote, do so sparingly, and make sure you have cited quoted material according to the current APA style.
Your assessment needs to demonstrate your understanding of the material, not how well you can quote someone else’s work.
Write in a professional tone, without writing errors.
Include a title page and references page, using the current APA style and format.
Write 6–8 pages with 1-inch margins, plus a title page and references page. An abstract is not required.
Include at least two current scholarly or professional resources.
Use APA-style headings to organize your paper.
Use Times New Roman font, 12 point.
Double space.

How do you think sexism and racism have changed since the 1950s?

Assignment 3: Gender Identity
We are socialized at every stage in life to conform to our gender identity. Societal reinforcement of tendencies of gender identity is relentless. For example, in hospitals, little girls are wrapped in pink and little boys in blue. This difference in colors influences how we learn and how we internalize our role in our society.
Girls tend to grow up to play feminine roles and boys tend to grow up to play masculine roles. This differentiation of gender identity has implications in social stratification. The videos given below will provide you with a better understanding of the differentiation of sexual identity from an earlier generation.
Search for and watch an episode of at least one of the following shows. You may find these videos using a variety of search methods including visiting your local library, using Netflix or your local video store, or searching on YouTube. If you have difficulty locating an episode of one of the following shows, contact your instructor for assistance in finding an alternative.

I Love Lucy
All in the Family
The Mickey Mouse Club
The Honeymooners
Leave it to Beaver
Father Knows Best
Gilligan’s Island
The Brady Bunch
I Dream of Jeannie

As you watch the video, ask yourself the following questions:

To what extent have things changed and to what extent have they remained the same in regards to gender roles, expectations, division, and identity from the time this show was originally popular and today?
How conscious and sensitive are the characters regarding gender prejudice, power inequality, and subordination?
Did they take inequality of the sexes for granted?

Based on your readings and understanding that you have gathered after watching the above-noted video, write a short biographical description of your life if you were to wake up tomorrow morning in the time period of the video you watched and find you have a different gender identity. Write a description of how you lived your life a day after your hypothetical change in gender as you answer the following questions:

Discuss how you would react on finding out that your sex is opposite. Would you feel a sense of relief, indifference, or elation? Why?
Discuss three ways your attitude towards the opposite sex was enlightened or would change as a result of what you learned from this project.  If you would not change your attitude, why?
Write down the ideas and attitudes you have taken for granted a member of your actual gender. Consider how your roles at home and in the office would change if you were a member of the opposite gender.
Relate the ideas of sexism and racism to the videos.  How do you think sexism and racism have changed since the 1950s?

Is it possible to establish a society in which there is no stratification based on class?

Assignment 2: Equality for All?
Social stratification is the ranking of individuals in a hierarchy of unequal wealth, occupational prestige, and power. It is a feature of society and not a reflection of individual uniqueness or differences. Stratification is a universal feature found in all societies: agrarian, industrial, and postindustrial. Furthermore, socialization and cultures reproduce stratification and transmit it from one generation to the next.
Social institutions such as education, the economy, politics, and government maintain the stratified status quo. The goal of these institutions is to provide the needs of society and not a radical transformation of structured inequality. Changes in social stratification are usually slow and incremental rather than fast and revolutionary.
This discussion will give you an insight into the difficulties all societies face with regards to social stratification. Based on your readings and understanding of the above issues, discuss the answer to the following question with your classmates:

Is it possible to establish a society in which there is no stratification based on class? Explain your response with reasons.

How might your mindset play a role in your learning and growth?

Strengthening Academic Skills
When it comes to academic skills, you’re not starting from scratch. Your previous undergraduate experience has helped you build a foundation of academic skills to draw from as you begin working on assignments and discussions for master’s level courses. In this unit, you’ve also had an opportunity to explore resources related to important academic skill areas, such as writing, library research, critical thinking, and reading. We hope this process has allowed you to reflect on your strengths, gain awareness of opportunities for growth, and have a better sense of the support, tools, and resources provides to help facilitate your continued development.
For this discussion, create and post a response that addresses each of the questions below. Your response should be two to three paragraphs in length.
Identifying skills

What academic skills do you feel are already strengths for you?
As you take the next step in your education and commit to a deeper study of subject material, what academic skills do you anticipate spending additional time developing?

Growth mindset

How might your mindset play a role in your learning and growth?

How are sexual behaviors of older women and older men perceived by human service students?

Human services professionals working with diverse populations often face challenges because of the clients’ various values and beliefs. Long-established beliefs (and sometimes fears) may influence clients’ access to services and resources, interfering with your ability to practice as a professional. For this Assignment, select a key issue related to working with a diverse population of clients in a specific region or area. Consider key barriers to providing services for this population and how you might overcome these barriers.
To complete this Assignment:
By Day 7
Write a 3- to 4- page paper that addresses the following:
· Describe the issue and region or area you selected. Include the population of clients, and be sure to use official resources when obtaining this demographic information.
· Explain challenges for human services professionals practicing in the region or area you selected. Include key barriers to providing services (e.g., language, accessibility, social stigma).
· Explain a strategy or process to assist with reducing prejudice, stereotyping, or bias in accessing services related to the issue you selected. Include how you, as the human services professional, might implement this strategy or process in the region or area you selected.
Reminder: Proper formatting and APA citations are required. Refer to the Writing Template for Course Papers for additional guidance.

Explain how ethnicity may influence human services practices.

People often try to categorize one another based on single factors such as place of origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, language, tribal affiliation, national boundaries, and personal philosophy. Today’s world is so diverse and complex, however, that you cannot assign an individual to such a simple category. Instead, diversity and complexity are best expressed through self-described ethnicity, which may be based on a variety of factors. For this Discussion, reflect on the definition of ethnicity and consider how it might influence your human services practices.
Is there a status quo in your work life that you think could be changed? In this Discussion, you will cultivate some of the important skills needed to challenge the existing state of affairs in your work life. Start by looking around your current workplace or envision the workplace at an organization with which you are familiar and start thinking, “What if?”
With these thoughts in mind:
By Day 4
Post a brief definition of ethnicity, based on your understanding of how ethnicity is presented in the Learning Resources. Then, explain how ethnicity may influence human services practices in your area of interest and why.
